Optimum part design basics
Part design basics:
- For most castings made from A380, A413 or A360 alloy, the recommended minimum wall thickness is 3.0 mm.
- Use draft angles of at least 1.5–2.0 degrees per side; 3.0 degrees per side is preferable.
- Avoid thin tool steel sections that can promote excessive soldering and premature die fatigue.- Avoid blind spots, such as bosses without ribs for feeding.
- Use fillets and corner radii of at least 1.5 mm wherever permissible.- Add ribs to improve strength and feeding characteristics.
- Avoid large increases in wall thickness. - Maintaining a uniform casting wall section is crucial for minimizing porosity and filling-related defects.
- Provide adequate draft of 2–3 degrees per side on gasket seal grooves to maintain the desired net shape. This helps prevent drag and reduces the need for expensive machining processes.
- Take a practical approach to assess fit, form, and function by considering all mating parts. This can have a significant impact on cost and GD&T quality constraints.
- Allow adequate surface area on the casting for ejector pin placement and proper ejection.
- Design parting lines with gradual transitions and a minimum draft angle of 5 degrees per side; a draft angle of 7–10 degrees is preferred.
- Consider the gating designs early in the part design process.
- Design review meetings between the customer and the die caster are vital for identifying solutions. - Mold flow is indispensable for optimizing the casting design.
